Welcome to our world

As one of the Developers of Creekside west, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Valdosta and Lowndes County.  I have lived here all of my life with the exception of times spent away in School and in the Armed Services and I can tell you that this is a wonderful place to live! “Why do you say that?” you might ask.  The following incomplete list is some of the reasons that might help you know why I love South Georgia and especially this area.

THE PEOPLE  -  At age 87, my Dad did not talk a lot, but he loved to ride around in the community and see what was happening.  One day on such an outing, Dad simply stated “Good people live here”.  What a powerful statement to make at the end of your days.   As time goes by it would seem that we have less “good people”, generally speaking, in our nation, but we do have many wonderful people here.

THE SEASONS -   We truly have four distinct seasons which linger with us for a reasonable amount of time.  With the Azaleas, Dogwoods, redbuds, and Magnolias, spring is truly a season to enjoy.  By mid-April or first of May we can start water sports such as swimming and water skiing.  Summer brings out the beach animal in most of us, and great beaches are available on the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic within a two hour drive.  It is true that July, August and the first part of September are hot and muggy, but that is also true for areas north of here.  However, things start of moderate usually by mid September, and October, November, and December are wonderful.  We enjoy year round outdoor sports, but fall is my very favorite time for golf, despite outside pressure from football and hunting.  Valdosta/Lowndes County is known for their State and National Championship High School football teams, but if you are into the College scene, Valdosta State University is an exciting and competitive team in their conference.  Also, the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Auburn, Florida State, and the Florida Gators are all within a day trip. Professional teams such as the Falcons and Jaguars are not too far away either.  If we have a short season, it is winter.  Many days we enjoy shirtsleeve weather in December and January.  In the early spring, flowering trees such as redbuds, plumbs, Japanese Magnolia break out in February.

LACK OF SEVERE WEATHER -  In the almost seventy years I have lived here, we have never had a hurricane and very few tornados.  We have rarely had some tail winds from tropical depressions in the near 60 mph category, but not the real thing.  It is not only the danger or inconvenience that hurricanes bring, but this geographic advantage rapidly coverts to a financial amenity, because there are places in Florida where you cannot buy insurance for your home at any price and property taxes are ridiculous.

TRANSPORTATION -  Valdosta is a regional center that has developed around good transportation infrastructure.  I-75, and nearby I-10 provide excellent access by ground.  Our regional airport offers good connections to most anywhere you would want to go.  I have business friends who travel every week and they tell me that they can check in, go through Security and board a plane in Valdosta and get to Atlanta faster than they could drive from their home (if they lived in Atlanta) through the city traffic, park in a remote lot (for which they pay) catch the shuttle to the terminal, go through a long check in line, and then go through a long security check line.  Smaller is sometimes better.   Also, if you fly frequently the airport staff will get to know you better in a smaller setting.

ENTERTAINMENT -  We have several cultural organization and events in Valdosta that promote the arts of music, theater,  paintings, and sculpture. Wild Adventures is an excellent family entertainment park located just south of Valdosta.  Also, we are located in striking distance to several metropolitan areas that allow our property owners to take part in entertainment features or cultural events in Orlando, Atlanta, Savannah, Jacksonville, and Tallahassee without having to live in the hassle that comes with such large cities.

HEALTH AND PROFESSIONAL CARE - The Metropolitan Valdosta Area is a regional business and professional center for the surrounding 9 or 10 counties.  When I came home to practice dentistry in 1966 there were ten dentists and twenty-five physicians.  Today there are over 50 dentists and probably close to 200 physicians.   In other words, we have a rapidly expanding professional service base.  There is an Emergency Medical Service in Hahira a little over a mile from Creekside West, and one hospital about  seven miles away and another about 11 miles away.  When you add to this all of the accountants, lawyers and other professional services available, the Valdosta/Lowndes area has much to offer in the way of professional services.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES - Hahira elementary and Middle Schools enjoy excellent reputations as does Lowndes High.  Valwood School is a wonderful private College Preparatory School located just 6 miles from Creekside West.   Valdosta State University is a highly accredited State University offering undergraduate, post graduate, and doctoral degrees.  Valdosta Technical College is located just five miles south and offers many courses for occupational preparation, but also some fun subjects I would love to take such as horticulture and culinary arts.

GOD AND COUNTRY – There is a healthy spiritual climate in this area and  it is ourhonor to be a part of Moody Air Force Base.  It is as multi-missioned base that constantly receives recognition for excellence; we are very proud of our brave men and women.

ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY – There is a diverse, broad based economy in the Valdosta/Lowndes County area.  It is the results of hard work and investment of our leaders and community.  It has been balanced with a sincere focus on quality growth and environmental concerns.

ABOUT US - The Doubletree in Doubletree Communities stands for the Whatley and the Tillman families.  Our family has lived here since the late eighteen hundreds and the Whatleys have been here for many years.  We have done several developments together or separately.  Stone Creek Golf Community is the largest.  Creekside west is patterned after the southern portion of Stone Creek which we call our “Garden Home Area”, except the lots are somewhat larger.  The concept is fairly simple: to provide high quality homes no smaller than 1800 sq ft for those who desire the privacy and security of a gated community.

Our Architectural review Board will look closely at each home to insure that it is constructed in such a way as not to duplicate another home in Creekside.   For continuity in this residential area, many homes will have the same style or material, but will not be an exact duplication of another house.   Enforcement of the Restrictive Covenants is the most valuable asset to any Community that is built under such covenants.

Welcome to our world!  We hope that you will stay!
